Lamination and envelopes
Laminate both sides in matt or gloss, or leave the card bare.
Lamination makes invitations sturdy enough for a child's bag. Leave them unlaminated if you will write each guest's name by hand. Add white envelopes to hand out or post the invitations straight away.
